How to Stop Getting Ingrown Toenails (For Good)

If you've had one ingrown toenail, you know the drill: tenderness along the nail edge, then redness, then real pain with every closed-toe shoe. And if you've had several, you know the most frustrating part — they come back.

Why they happen

Some people inherit nails that naturally curve into the skin. Beyond genetics, the usual suspects are trimming nails too short or rounding the corners, tight shoes that press the nail into the toe, and stubbed-toe injuries that change how the nail grows.

Prevention that actually works

  • Cut straight across — leave the corners visible; don't chase the curve.
  • Leave a little length — cutting too short lets skin fold over the nail's path.
  • Check your toe box — shoes should never press your big toe from the side or top.
  • Don't perform bathroom surgery — digging at the corner almost always makes the regrowth worse.

The permanent fix

For recurring ingrown nails, a brief in-office procedure removes the problem edge and treats the nail root so that edge doesn't grow back. It's done under local anesthetic, takes minutes, and for most patients it's the last time they ever think about ingrown toenails.
