That sharp first-step pain is the signature of plantar fasciitis. The fascia tightens while you sleep, and those first steps re-stretch irritated tissue — which is why it eases as you move and returns after you've been sitting. The pattern is distinctive enough that it usually points straight to the diagnosis, and in-office ultrasound confirms it the same visit. The important part: the vast majority resolves without surgery when the plan is correct. More on heel pain treatment →
If you have diabetes, this is the single highest-value habit for keeping your feet. Each day, look at the tops, the soles, and between every toe — use a mirror or ask a family member for the parts you can't see. You're looking for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or any change in color. Neuropathy means your feet can't report problems through pain, so your eyes have to do that job. Anything new that hasn't improved in 24 hours is a phone call, not a wait-and-see. More on diabetic foot care →
Plan for about 45 minutes. We take a full history — not just the foot, but your health, activity, footwear, and what you've already tried. Then a focused exam, imaging if it will change the plan, and a conversation about options in plain language. Most patients leave with treatment already started. Bring your insurance card, a list of medications, any prior imaging, and the shoes you wear most — wear patterns tell us things an exam can't. Full new-patient guide →
There is no universally “good” shoe — there's a good shoe for your mechanics. High arches generally need cushioning; flat, pronating feet generally need structure and a firm heel counter. Two tests take seconds in any store: try to twist the shoe like a towel (it should resist), and press the heel counter (it shouldn't collapse). Shop in the afternoon when feet are at their largest, and replace running shoes on mileage, not appearance. More on custom orthotics →
