Overview

When conservative care has run its course, surgery done well is the path back to normal life. Dr. Panchal performs the full scope of podiatric surgery, always with the same rule: operate only when it's genuinely the right answer.

Surgery is a means to an end: getting you back on your feet. We treat it that way.

What to expect

Your care, step by step

  1. A candid surgical consultWhat surgery can fix, what it can't, and what recovery honestly looks like.
  2. Planning around your lifeScheduling, weight-bearing restrictions, and work/family logistics — planned up front.
  3. Modern techniquesApproaches chosen to minimize incisions, pain, and downtime wherever possible.
  4. Recovery with supportStructured post-op visits so healing stays on course.

Our Approach: Three Conditions Before We Operate

A surgical recommendation here requires three things to line up: a clear structural diagnosis, meaningful symptoms that have persisted despite properly executed conservative care, and a procedure with a good track record for your specific problem. If any of the three is missing, we say so — a substantial share of surgical consultations here end with a non-surgical plan.

That conservatism is not reluctance to operate. Dr. Panchal is fellowship-trained in reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery and dual board-certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery in both forefoot and rearfoot/ankle surgery — a distinction held by relatively few surgeons. The point is that surgical skill is most valuable when it is applied to the cases that actually need it.

Recognizing the Signs: When to Get a Surgical Opinion

Seek a surgical opinion when pain has persisted for months despite appropriate non-surgical treatment, when a deformity is progressing, when a joint is unstable or locking, when wounds recur over a bony prominence, or when a previous surgery has not produced the expected result.

Second opinions are welcome and common here. If another surgeon has recommended a procedure and you want the imaging reviewed and the reasoning explained independently, that is a reasonable and worthwhile visit — particularly for elective correction where the decision is genuinely yours to make.

Recovery: What You Control

Procedures are performed in accredited surgical facilities with anesthesia matched to the procedure, from local with sedation to general; smaller procedures are done in-office under local anesthesia. You will know exactly what to expect, including anesthesia and recovery, before anything is scheduled.

Four things influence your outcome more than almost anything else: following weight-bearing restrictions exactly, keeping the surgical site clean and dry as instructed, not smoking during healing, and keeping follow-up appointments so small problems are caught while they are still small. Patients who do those four things reliably do well.

Common questions

General Foot & Ankle Surgery — your questions, answered

How do I know surgery is actually necessary?
When three things line up: a clear structural diagnosis, meaningful symptoms despite properly executed conservative care, and a procedure with a good track record for your specific problem. If any of the three is missing, we say so — a large part of our surgical consults end with a non-surgical plan.
Where is surgery performed, and will I be asleep?
Procedures are performed in accredited surgical facilities, with anesthesia matched to the procedure — from local with sedation to general. Smaller procedures are done in-office under local anesthesia. You'll know exactly what to expect, including anesthesia, before scheduling.
What can I do to make my recovery go well?
The big four: follow weight-bearing restrictions exactly (that's the one that undoes results), keep the surgical site clean and dry as instructed, don't smoke — it measurably impairs bone and wound healing — and keep your follow-ups so problems are caught while they're trivial.
